Art Major – Portrait Photography on Roosevelt Row, Phoenix, AZ

Carol is an Art major at Arizona State University where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree to become an art teacher.  She was also a bridesmaid in my wedding!  Being an Art Major, Carol was a huge help in crafting decorations and signs for my wedding.  She has always shown a passion for the arts, specifically ceramics.  As a typical art student, Carol can be heard complaining that the university spends too much money on the football team and not enough money renovating the art buildings!

Roosevelt Row Arts District in downtown Phoenix was the fist place that came to mind when thinking about locations for this photo session.  Roosevelt Row is home to First Fridays, a self-guided art walk on, you guessed it, the first Friday of every month.  On First Fridays the streets are crowded with people and buzzing with excitement.  The rest of the month is much quieter, but there is still plenty of cool things to look at.  There are colorful murals painted on the sides of buildings, sculptures and stages scattered through the blocks, and many of the local businesses are located in historic style homes.

When the day of the photo session came, Carol was still getting over a cold.  She was a trooper and decided that she wasn’t going to let a cold prevent this awesome shoot.  So with her longboard and Kleenex in hand, we drove down to Roosevelt Row.  Despite her being under the weather, we still had a blast walking/longboarding down the streets of the Art District looking at all the murals and picking our favorite ones to take pictures at.

While walking around, Carol spotted this sculpture and immediately recognized it.  It used to be housed on the ASU campus.  It has since been relocated to Roosevelt Row where it has been painted, stickered, and graffitied.  I had to photograph her in the sculpture that used to be housed on her college campus; it was too perfect to pass up.

My favorite mural of the day was this bright green octopus eating sushi!  I was so excited about this piece that I had to lay on the dirty ground to get the right angle for this photo.
